Day 5, May 29 2002

Home Previous day Next day

Jantzen Beach, Oregon, to Fort Bragg, California, 578 miles start to finish, lots of stops.

Left hotel at 7 and went through Portland in rush hour. Turned off 5 South and headed towards coast on 99, nice farming communities and small towns.  Intense smell of oranges at one point, countryside just like Surrey in South of England, everything incredibly green and lush.  Pretty cloudy but warm enough to have roof down.  First glimpse of Pacific Ocean at Oceanlake, Oregon.  That's when the fog set in. Drove the coast road all day but basically only caught glimpses of the ocean and beaches because we were driving through cloud and fog and drizzle (not bad enough to need the roof up though) until 7 pm. We must have crossed a hundred bridges during this part of the trip.

Had lunch in an amazing retro diner in Florence, Oregon. Just inside the California border we started going through the Redwood National Park. Those trees need to be seen to be believed, we had the roof down and David just reclined his seat to watch as we drove through the park. Ate dinner in Eureka and since it was still early decided to continue. It was dark at 8 and the last 50 miles on highway 1 to Fort Bragg was the most incredible collection of switchbacks I have ever driven. I'd never seen 10 mph cautionary corners before, and this road had plenty. It took us an hour and a half to get there. Arrived at 10:20, staying at the Beachcomber Motel.

San Fran only a couple of hours away now, will aim to cross the Bridge just after 9 am.

Footnote - it seems that the further south we go the colder it is getting.

Footnote 2 - Music in car holding out well. Will need to look for an oil change tomorrow.
