Day 10, June 3 2002

Home Previous day Next day

Flagstaff, Arizona to Roswell, New Mexico - 545 miles. Another state, another time zone.

Late start, went to Meteor Crater where Jeff Bridges returned to Mother Ship in Star Man. Stayed till noon, David totally absorbed by it. Had lunch and drove through the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert national parks. Really impressive, we walked all the loops and took lots of pics.

Then headed for Roswell, tomorrows main attraction being the Alien center here. Drove for what seemed like forever to find somewhere to eat and stumbled on one of those neon relict of the 50's diners in the middle of nowhere. Grub was great and the people in there were all twilight zone extras.  Arrived at midnight after driving for several hours on dead straight roads in pitch blackness.  David had seat right back and at 80 F we had the roof down too so he had a great ride. Kept seeing strange lights in the sky as we approached Roswell. I wouldn't mention it but I saw them too. Spooky. We are in the best motel room we have stayed in so far - a suite with 2 TV's and a living room with bar - and at the cheapest rate yet as well. Seems like motel room rates are like airline ticket prices - no logic to them.

Memorable quotes today from my passenger:

"There must be a gillion stars up there, you can even see the small ones"

"Dad, you're mixing up fact with reality again"
