Artist’s
Statement
My
work is a continual attempt to understand the personality of a single
brushstroke when it has life and movement, when it compromises and blends,
where it is so purposefully placed that it rings true.
I am inspired by my surroundings and the work of Winslow Homer, Turner and
Whistler, each for the fresh life their work still holds, and the
different brushstrokes they master.
I strive to achieve certain freshness in my work, inviting the viewer to
visually trace where each stroke leads, and where they can follow, adding
their own connection and experiences. This visual communication invites
the viewer to complete the narrative, by bringing his or her own
experiences to it. I find a visual moment captured in time creates a
different memory for each viewer. This invites them to search for their
own meaning, as each person brings their own gender, social and economic
background, and previous conceptions to the appreciation of art.
It may be true that a painting is
never finished. It is when the artist reaches a point when they have
resolved troubled areas and found peace, a point when they can stop and
rest.
My new work is the passage from the inspiration, through the struggle, and
finally to the resolution. I allow each painting the freedom to change in
this process. It is a design balance for me with each brushstroke
affecting the next. I feel I have achieved my aim when the viewer can find
a connection.
“Verbal
communication has never worked for me - lets try the visual.”
- Richard Gere, Runaway Bride.
